Paridhi Gupta, Luis McDougall, Serenity Her, and Jehona Zeneli were recognized for their undergraduate research at UW-Madison’s WiSys Quick Pitch competition on Wednesday, April 16. This year’s competition was the first one held on the UW-Madison campus and was organized in collaboration with the Wisconsin Energy Institute (WEI).
Senior Paridhi Gupta earned first place for her pitch, titled “Stochastic Processing Unit.” Gupta discussed how novel approaches are needed as the demand for energy-efficient computing grows. Stochastic computing is a low-power way to accomplish this by performing calculations with simple logic gates. It has been harder to use in real-world applications because the circuits are typically built for specific tasks, but Gupta’s research focuses on making stochastic computing more flexible by creating an open-source simulator and updating the instruction set to allow for basic decision-making.
