Qin leads research on manufacturing 3D photonic structures

Hantang Qin, an assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will lead a new project to develop a novel manufacturing platform to fabricate 3D photonic structures, which could be useful for future quantum computing technologies.

The two-year effort, funded by a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, is a collaboration with College of Engineering colleagues Chu Ma, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Zongfu Yu, a professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Qin, Ma and Yu plan to use what they call the “Field-Assisted Nano Assembly System” to create 3D photonic structures with submicron resolution, laying the groundwork for a future system that could produce them at scale.
