UW-Madison is celebrating its 175th anniversary Tuesday with an event that recognizes the launch of new technology to fight cancer. SHINE Technologies in Janesville is founded by a UW alumnus, Greg Piefer, who came up with the idea for the company while he was a student at the university.
The company focuses on nuclear fusion technology and recently launched “Ilumira,” a radioisotope that targets cancerous tumors and helps deliver radiation to kill cancer cells while limiting the impact to the surrounding, healthy tissue. More than 40 other UW alumni also work at SHINE, and Piefer said the partnership is mutually beneficial.
“The UW’s been absolutely foundational to our story here at SHINE,” Piefer said. “It was core to the ideas on which the company was created and there’s ongoing collaboration both in the development of new medicines, but also in the development of progression of nuclear fusion.”
