UW-Madison researchers set to forge ahead amid Trump uncertainty

Federally funded community health centers serve 1 in 11 Americans, most of them low-income and many underinsured. The health centers are under stress as they work to meet the specific needs of each community they are in.

UW-Madison is urging its researchers to stay the course until the impact of President Donald Trump’s order barring Health and Human Services officials from communicating outside of the government becomes clear.

UW-Madison, along with hundreds of other universities, has research contracts with the federal government, especially in the areas of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense. UW-Madison health researchers get awards from its agencies, including the medical research powerhouse National Institutes of Health.

In a letter to staff, UW-Madison Vice Chancellor for Research Dorota Grejner-Brzezinska said changes are evolving rapidly, and researchers should be “alert and adaptable” as new information is released with federal health agencies.
